Guwahati: The Assam government will implement development projects worth Rs 850 crore in Jorhat district.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the projects as part of the Fortnight of Development initiative under which projects worth Rs 15,000 crore will be undertaken in 11 districts across the state.

Among the development projects, the first effort will be to make a memorial for Lachit Borphukan at his Maidam or grave. The locality will be developed into a significant tourist destination and this will include improvement in road connectivity.

Sarma also announced the development of roads connecting Jorhat and Golaghat. He emphasised the need for developing the key establishments in the region into a special economic corridor along the lines of national highways.

These will connect Jorhat Medical College Hospital, Rowriah Airport, Assam Agriculture University and several other institutions and commercial hubs.

A flyover will be constructed on the way to Jorhat Medical College to ease traffic congestion. It will be over 90 bighas of land in the heart of the city as the existing Deputy Commissioner’s Office will be relocated. A part of the establishment will be converted into a museum to showcase the history of the district.

A new mini-stadium project has been announced in the Mariani region. Land and fund have been allocated for infrastructure development at Assam Women’s University.

There are plans to upgrade Sericulture Research Centre in Jorhat.

The existing Jorhat Jail facility will be moved to a new location in the district. Part of it will be developed into a 100-bigha park, which will be the largest in the state of Assam.

The other part of the space will be converted into a heritage centre and memorial for the freedom fighters of the region.
