New Delhi: In a bold leap towards the future of transportation, Maruti Suzuki is set to soar into the skies with its latest venture – electric air copters. The company, known for its innovative approach to mobility solutions, is gearing up to introduce compact air taxis designed to transform urban transportation dynamics.

According to reports, Maruti Suzuki's foray into the realm of electric air taxis is set to begin in Japan and the United States, with a vision to redefine urban commuting. The compact air taxis, reminiscent of popular ground-based rideshare services like Uber and Ola, aim to transport up to three passengers, including the pilot.

The SkyDrive, the electric air copter developed by Maruti Suzuki, is set to make its debut at the 2025 Osaka Expo in Japan. Featuring 12 units of motors and rotors, the innovative air taxi is poised to capture the attention of the global audience.

Kento Ogura, Assistant Manager at Suzuki Motor, emphasized the importance of affordability for success in the Indian market. The electric air copters are expected to be competitively priced against traditional helicopters. With a take-off weight almost half that of conventional helicopters, the air taxis offer the flexibility to use building rooftops as launch and landing pads.

Maruti Suzuki aims to engage potential customers and forge partnerships in India following the debut of SkyDrive. The company envisions a future where urban air mobility is not only efficient but also economically viable. The adoption of electrification has significantly reduced manufacturing and maintenance costs, making the venture financially feasible.

Initially offering a range of 15 kilometers, the three-passenger air taxi is expected to double its range by 2029 and further increase to 40 kilometers by 2031. This expansion is seen as a strategic move to cater to India's vast and diverse geography, making urban air mobility a practical solution for the country's transportation needs.

Maruti Suzuki is actively engaging in regulatory discussions with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to explore avenues for manufacturing in India. While the timeline for local production remains unconfirmed, Kento Ogura affirmed the company's commitment to the 'Make in India' initiative, highlighting the country's conducive manufacturing ecosystem.

As Maruti Suzuki progresses in its discussions with regulatory authorities and prepares for the debut of the SkyDrive, the company remains steadfast in its pursuit of revolutionizing urban air mobility, prioritizing affordability and accessibility in India's transportation landscape.
