Meghalaya hosts technical session on food safety awareness

Shillong: A technical session cum food awareness safety session was held in Meghalaya's capital Shillong on April 25.

The State Food Testing Laboratory in Meghalaya in collaboration with the commissionerate of food safety, of the health and family welfare department held the one-day session at its conference hall. Joram Beda, the commissioner of food safety, emphasized the importance of food safety in public health and praised the enforcement wing of the commissionerate of Food Safety for its efforts. 

He highlighted the World Health Organisation's (WHO) 2015 study on the global burden of foodborne diseases, which found over 600 million cases and 4.5 lakh deaths annually. Beda emphasized the disproportionate impact of food diseases on the under-5 population and low and middle-income nations. 

Beda stressed the need for regular monitoring of foodborne and zoonotic diseases in the state. Dr. Wadamika Lyngdoh, deputy commissioner of food safety (technical), emphasized the session's objective to "equip participants with technical skills and understand the potential impact on society."

The chief guest and other dignitaries also honored noted entrepreneurs from the state incuding Ioalyn Single Bees Honey, KF Shadap Food-Turmeric (Lakadong), and Kynjai Wine.
