Shillong: The Meghalaya government has given a grant of Rs 100 crore to Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) and infused an equity of Rs 550 crore to help the struggling entity turn around.

The state government hopes that MeECL will come out of the woods in the next three to five years. It also allocated Rs 400 crore for the entity for this fiscal year.

MeECL has been facing multiple challenges, including financial instability and employees' ire. On Wednesday, the employees threatened to go on strike over delay in salary payment.

The state has a total installed capacity of 356 MW generating about 1,200 million units annually. The state government is planning to augment the generation capacity and improve the power mix in favour of renewable energy, which will be in line with our long-term objective of sustainable growth and carbon neutrality.

The first unit of the long-pending Ganol hydropower project in Garo Hills has been operationalised recently.
