Mining sector registers record production in FY 2023-24

New Delhi: The Indian mining sector recorded a record production for March 2024,  standing at 156.1, marking a 1.2% rise compared to March 2023, the government announced on Friday. Furthermore, the index for the entire fiscal year 2023-24 has shown an increase of 7.5% over the previous fiscal year 2022-23.

Key minerals such as copper concentrate, gold, manganese ore, diamond, graphite, kyanite, silimanite, limeshell, limestone, and magnesium showed positive growth. Iron ore and limestone, which account for 80 percent of the total MCDR mineral production, showed high growth in FY 2023-24. 

Iron ore production reached 277 million metric tons (MMT), breaking the previous record of 258 MMT. Limestone production also increased by 10.7 percent to 450 MMT. Primary aluminium production also broke the previous record, increasing from 40.73 lakh tons to 41.59 tons at a 2.1 percent growth rate. India is the world's second-largest aluminium producer, third-largest lime producer, and fourth-largest iron ore producer.
