Guwahati: The North Eastern Frontier Railway has established state-of-the-art laundry care centres in Guwahati, Katihar, and Alipurduar to meet the growing linen needs in trains.

The centres have a production capacity of 16,000 bedroll packets per day, while Katihar and Alipurduar have capacities of 2,000 and 2,100 bedroll packets per day, respectively.

These centres will cater to the growing linen requirements of trains in Guwahati, Kamakhya, Alipurduar, and Katihar.

The state-of-the-art laundry at Guwahati is a tunnel-based system that can handle large volumes of linen while optimizing water, power, steam, and chemicals usage.

The washing process involves soiled linens being weighted and fed to an automatic conveyor, then loaded into a tunnel batch washer for thorough washing and cleaning. Robotic feeding is used to transfer the washed linens to the dryer, and water is extracted through a hydraulic press.

The washed linens are then unloaded in a shuttle conveyor and dried through industrial dryers. The linens are then ironed in an ironing system machine, which automatically folds the linen after completion. A whiteness meter is used to check the quality of the linens.

The linen sets are then packed in bags for supply to their respective trains. N. F. Railway is committed to providing clean and hygienic bedrolls to passengers and plans to establish such mechanised laundry in other locations under its jurisdiction.
