Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier railway will attach additional train coaches "for the ease of passengers travelling by train" amid the strike called by commercial vehicle operators in Assam.

A spokesperson for the railways said that the initiative is expected to "lessen the problem being faced". He added that the augmentation of train coaches was adopted by railways to facilitate wait-listed passengers which in turn helps to clear the extra rush of train passengers.

The details of the new coaches can be found below:

Train no. 15613 (Guwahati- Murkongselek) Lachit Express and train no. 15603 (Guwahati- Ledo) Intercity Express are being attached with an extra sleeper class coach each on January 5 and 6.

Train no. 15614 (Murkongselek- Guwahati) Lachit Express and 15604 (Ledo-Guwahati) Intercity Express are being attached with one extra sleeper class coach each on January 6 and 7.

Train no. 15665/15666 (Guwahati- Mariani- Guwahati) Express is being attached with an extra general class coach each on January 5 and 6 and January 6 and 7.

Train no. 15615/15616 (Guwahati- Silchar- Guwahati) Express is attached with one extra sleeper class coach each on January 6 and 7.

It needs mention here that commercial vehicles and other modes of public transport stayed off the roads in most parts of Assam on Friday owing to a 48-hour strike called by a joint forum of transporters' unions to protest the new penal law on hit-and-run cases.

After meeting transport department officials, the striking body decided to reduce the striking hours to 24 hours instead of the previously planned 48 hours.
