Northeast Frontier Railways stands at a 20% growth rate this fiscal

Guwahati: With record revenue earnings in the last fiscal, Northeast Frontier Railway is staring at a further 20 percent increase in 2022–23. During May and April this year, NFR has already earned Rs. 1360 crores in revenue.

Trade in the Northeast has seen significant growth in the past few years, and a fair share of it can be attributed to the Northeast Frontier Railways. This can be supported by the fact that NFR has registered a 26 percent increase in revenue during the financial year 2021-22, compared to the previous year.

In an exclusive conversation with Business Northeast, General Manager of NFR, Anshul Gupta said that they are looking at further growth of at least 20 percent by the end of the current financial year 2022-23.

There has been a rise in income from passengers and freight traffic, additional coaching, and sundry. NFR crossed revenue earnings of Rs. 6028 crore in 2021-22 compared to Rs. 4778.22 crore in the previous year.

NFR recorded a hooping 128.21 percent growth in originating passengers, earning a revenue of Rs. 1050.95 crores; while freight revenue rose from Rs. 2190.66 crores in the previous year to Rs. 2605.49 crore in 2021-22. It earned Rs. 2143.42 crore from the sundry segment in 2021-22, registering a 6.53 percent increase as compared to Rs. 2012.08 crore in the previous financial year. The revenue from another coaching segment also went up by 98.76 percent, to Rs. 228.51 crore, from Rs. 114.97 crore in 2020–21.

Gupta accredited the increase in earnings to the various pro-active initiatives of the Railways including the addition of 292 new coaches in the Mail/Express trains; 476 Covid-19 parcel specials and 502 Kisan parcel special trains that resulted in a resurgence in revenue. "Sustainable efforts of the Business Development Units (BDUs) of NFR, a new stream of traffic generated earning of more than Rs. 127 crore in 2021-22," he added.

Under the  “Zero Scrap Mission” of Indian Railways, NFR has sold scrap worth Rs. 155.78 crore; a 64.56 percent against the total sale of Rs. 94.66 crore during the corresponding period of the previous year.
