Northeast India rank bottom in foreign direct investment inflows.

Despite all the fanfare of the Centre and the state governments in promoting the Northeast both at home and abroad for its potential, foreign investors still don't see the region as high priority.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) statistics maintained by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) reveal that states of Northeast are at rock bottom when it comes to recieving FDI equity inflows.

From October 2019 to June 2022, Assam which is placed 24th in the country got Rs 147.6766 crores( $19.9018) in FDI which is 0.0125 per cent of the country's FDI investment. Arunachal Pradesh which is 25th in the list got 40.94 crores( $5.5549) as FDI while Meghalaya got Rs 8.168 crores( $1.0965 ) is 26th in the list.

DPIIT oversees the applications filed on the Foreign Investment Facilitation Portal and forwards them to the concerned administrative ministry (competent authority). DPIIT is the administrative ministry for FDI proposals by Non Resident lndians (NRl)/ Export Oriented Units (EOU’s) requiring approval of the Government.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is considered as a major source of non-debt financial
resource for the economic development. Maharashtra was in the top for attracting the highest FDI.

Tripura is 29th in the list with FDI inflow of Rs 4.2041 crores($0.5622) and Nagaland is 31st with FDI inflow of Rs 0.105 crores( $0.0139 ) is 31st in the list. There is no mention of Mizoram in the list.

Nagaland this year got FDI with NagaEd, a locally based digital education company getting foreign direct investment from companies in Australia and Singapore as well as domestically.

Ambassador of Thailand to India Ms Pattarat Hongtong and Thai business & industry leaders met Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday in Guwahati.

The meeting discussed scope and opportunities for cooperation between Assam & Thailand. "I’m certain we’ll develop a vibrant business relationship" Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.

There have been nunerous foreign delegations which have visited states of the Northeast during trade fairs and with governments but nothing much has been realised in getting FDI from them.
