Rs 3000 cr road projects on track in Meghalaya

Shillong: The Meghalaya government is hopeful that it would complete road projects worth Rs 3,000 crore in 2023-24.
Several large road projects were initiated in the last three years and these include the Dawki-Bholaganj road, the Balat-Shella road, the Mairang-Ranigodown-Azra road, the Demthring-Sohmynting-Moodymmai road, the Nartiang-Nongpoh road and the Rongram-Phulbari road.

The state government is also developing an Integrated Transport Network Development Plan and Road Asset Management System in collaboration with the World Bank. Following these integrated approaches, the government looks to streamline the efforts at building new roads and maintaining the existing network.

In this year’s budget, the government allocated Rs 2.226 crore for the roads sector.

The state has also initiated several rural road projects to better connectivity and boost tourism. The government has announced the CM Rural Connectivity Scheme under which villages that are not covered under the central PMGSY will be connected.

There are projects to build suspensions and footbridges across streams and rivers in remote areas keeping in mind the inconvenience that residents face during the rains.

The restoration works on roads and bridges damaged during the floods of June 2022 is also in progress. The cost being incurred for the restoration is Rs 188 crore and the government said the work will be complete next financial year.
