Guwahati: Eateries in railway coaches are serving up quite the treat in areas under the jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway, which started the initiative.
These unique eateries were sighted after the NF Railway converted some of its old train coaches, which were not fit for use, and turned them into eateries. Due to their uniqueness, these eateries have emerged as a surefire hit among the masses.
"These restaurants have been opened in the vacant space in the circulating area providing dining opportunity to both the rail passengers as well as the general public", an official said.
13 such coach restaurants are already operational in the areas under the NF Railway. "Eight of these coach restaurants are in Katihar, two in Alipurduar, and one each at Rangiya, Lumding, and Tinsukia are already being set up", the official said. "Both passengers and members of the general public are enjoying this unique dining experience", he added.
Due to the success of this initiative, the NF Railway has earmarked 62 locations for introducing such coach restaurants. "Work is already underway in 7 locations in Katihar, 13 in Alipurduar, 14 each in Rangiya, Lumding, and Tinsukia divisions", the official said.
The railway has envisaged the coach restaurants keeping in mind aesthetics and a heritage-based look to attract customers. "People can enjoy the experience of dining in train coaches with their friends and families. In these coaches, food, snacks, and beverages are being made available", he added.
"These restaurants aim to cater to the needs of passengers and the public apart from generating non-fare revenue for the railways", said the official, adding, "Through this initiative, we hope to create employment for both skilled and unskilled workers."
