Agartala: In a groundbreaking development, Tripura, is set to strengthen its regional connectivity, opening new avenues for economic growth.

Overcoming past connectivity challenges, the state is poised to establish a vital rail link not only with Bangladesh but also with Myanmar, laying the foundation for a significant economic boost.

While the existing connection with Akhaura in Bangladesh has already facilitated cross-border trade, the upcoming railway link from Belonia in South District of Tripura to Feni in Bangladesh is set to enhance connectivity further.

The sanctioned survey for the construction of the Belonia-Feni rail line, encompassing 2.92 km on the Indian side and 27 km on the Bangladeshi side, marks a crucial step towards fostering bilateral economic ties.

“The Belonia in South District of Tripura will be connected with Feni in Bangladesh. Survey for construction of Belonia-Feni new rail line was sanctioned in 2012-13. The link consists 2.92 km in Indian side and 27 km from Feni station (Bangladesh) to Indo-Bangladesh border in Bangladesh side. Survey for 2.92 km in Indian side has been completed and DPR has been submitted to Railway Board in December, 2020 and awaiting approval by the Railway Board. Cost of the project is 66.11 Cr. Now, approval by the Bangladesh Government is required for construction of 27 km line from Feni station of Bangladesh to Indo-Bangladesh border”, said an official.

The official said that once realized, this rail link promises to streamline trade and transportation, opening up new opportunities for businesses on both sides of the border.

With the connection of Feni in Bangladesh, Tripura would access the Chittagong port.

Furthermore, in a visionary move, there is a proposal to extend rail connectivity from Jawaharnagar in Tripura to Darlawn in Mizoram, creating a 257 km rail link that will connect the state not only with Myanmar but potentially with other Southeast Asian nations. The ambitious plan envisions a broader network that could extend to Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Singapore, transforming Tripura into a strategic hub for regional trade and commerce.

This forward-looking approach aligns with the larger regional vision for Asian Rail Connectivity, emphasizing the need for seamless transportation networks to propel economic development. As Tripura emerges as a key player in this regional integration, the potential for increased trade, tourism, and investment becomes a promising reality, marking a significant milestone in the economic trajectory of the state.
