New Delhi: India's Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation fell to -0.92% in April, compared to 1.34% in March, data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed.

This marks the lowest WPI inflation since August 2020, when it was -0.58%. The decline in inflation was mainly due to the drop in prices of basic metals, food products, mineral oils, textiles, non-food articles, chemical & chemical products, rubber & plastic products, and paper & paper products.

The WPI food inflation in April was 0.17%, a decrease from 2.32% in March, while inflation in manufactured products was at -2.42%, lower than the -0.77% recorded in March. Primary articles and fuel & power categories saw inflation of 1.6% and 0.93% in April, respectively.

The Ministry noted that prices of crude petroleum & natural gas, minerals, and food articles increased in April compared to March, while non-food articles declined. WPI has been on a downward trend for the last 11 months from its 20-year highs.
