The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has created a war room to sort the issue

Guwahati: Property tax paid online has not been updated on the Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) website for some property holders, Business North East has learned from some concerned citizens.

Many owners are now told by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) officials to go to the Uzaan Bazaar office to verify that they have paid the money as the last date of payment has been set on March 31. The GMC has a website – www.gmcpropertytax.com – to streamline online tax payments.

Amid the ongoing hiccups, the government of Assam has started an “Ease of Paying Property Tax” initiative launched by the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs.

GMC Assistant Commissioner Amarjyoti Borah informed Business North East that as per last year's records, Guwahati saw 3..4 lakh property registrations last year. "Around 1.8 lakh property owners paid taxes last year. There may be two or three holding numbers for a single property", said Borah.

Property holders facing problems have been asked to go with their receipts to the GMC's office in Uzan Bazar office or the revenue zonal office to iron out the problems. "They can send the queries via mail as well to egovernance.gmc@gmail.com", said Borah.

He also revealed that the GMC has set up a 'War Room' to address such concerns.

A property or house tax is the amount of money paid by the property owners to the municipal corporation or the local government of the area where the property is located. Properties, in this context, are all tangible real estate, an individual house, or office building that the owner has rented to someone else. The government collects the amount of property tax and uses it for the maintenance or repair of various public facilities such as roads, parks, schools, sewage systems, etc.
