2000 accounts are opened on daily basis under Jan Dhan Yojana in NE

Guwahati: The country’s leading bank, State Bank of India, is opening 2000 bank accounts on a daily basis in the North Eastern Region under the flagship scheme Jan Dhan Yojana.

Talking to BNE, Suranjana Dutta, General Manager, Network 1, SBI, said that under the Jan Dhan Yojana 2000 accounts are still being opened on a regular basis in seven states of the region.

She said that there is a need for increasing financial literacy among the marginalised and the poor in the North East to reap the benefit of financial inclusion.

Dutta also highlighted the due to SBIs vast reach in the region the bank has been able to reach the doorsteps of many people staying in remote areas who were still unbanked.

Talking about SBIs reach, Dutta said that the bank has also set up branch in the remotest location in Arunachal Pradesh where the population is scarce.

“Our aim is to reach everyone people to solve their banking needs and we have been doing it,” Dutta said.

Notably, SBI has been assigned the lead bank responsibility in 253 districts, which envisages the assignment of lead roles to individual banks for the districts allotted to them.

The lead bank acts as a leader in coordinating the efforts of all credit institutions in the allotted districts to increase the flow of credit to agriculture, MSE, and other economic activities, with the district being the basic unit in terms of geographical area. SBI has been assigned lead bank responsibility in 253 districts.
