Guwahati: At a time when the tea business is struggling and the attitude is "sullen," students from a local college in Assam have introduced green tea to demonstrate that all is not lost.

Tyagbir Hem Baruah College, which is located on 33 acres of land in Karchantola, Nanduar, near Jamugurihat, has launched the green tea. There is a tea garden at the campus.

The authorities have yet to give the product a brand name and will monitor how it performs in the market. The product has been introduced in the local market and is priced at Rs 225 for a 100 gm package and Rs 130 for a 50 gm packet.

He claims that the institution generates roughly Rs 1.85 lakh per year by selling green leaves from the tea plantation to local enterprises. "We want our kids to be able to learn and earn at the same time in college," college principal Ajit Hazarika told local media.

This is Assam's first college with a tea garden.

During their free time, students from the surrounding districts harvest leaves at the tea garden and earn roughly Rs 35-40 per hour. This is a skill development effort, but we have not received any government funding for it.

Tea cultivation on college grounds began in 2015 on around 4.63 acres and was expanded to another 2.64 acres in 2019.

Green tea, a hydrating beverage from China, provides a variety of health advantages. It is abundant in flavonids, which can improve heart health by decreasing blood cholesterol and preventing blood clotting. Green tea may also have an effect on liver, prostate, and colorectal cancers, according to research. Tea has also been proved to be anti-inflammatory, which may maintain one's skin clean and bright.

The green tea plant includes a variety of beneficial chemicals. The pesticide issue has had a significant impact on the tea business, since several samples were rejected by a trading authority due to high pesticide levels.
