New Delhi: Amazon has announced job cuts affecting hundreds of staff in its cloud computing business, AWS, which now accounts for 14 percent of Amazon's total revenue, said reports. The US-headquartered company will remove its self-checkout system, Just Walk Out, from all physical stores.

The cuts impact sales, marketing, global services, and physical store technology teams. However, Amazon has resolved to continue to hire and grow in core areas. The firm said the latest job cuts impact several hundred roles in sales, marketing, and global services and a few hundred roles in its physical stores' technology team.

Amazon officials informed the media that these decisions are "difficult but necessary" as we continue to invest, hire, and optimize resources to deliver innovation for their customers.

The firm also said that "it will continue to hire and grow, especially in core areas of our business", adding that there are thousands of jobs available and it is working to find internal opportunities for employees whose roles are affected.

An Amazon executive in India informed Business North East that such layoffs also took place last year. “ It actually depends on the processes in which you are involved as an Amazon employee," she said.

Among other firms in India, Byju's and Apple also cut jobs last week.
