New Delhi: Centre nods to set up of three new cooperative bodies

The Centre Wednesday approved a proposal to set up three new cooperative bodies - the National Cooperative Export Society, the National Level Cooperative Society for Organic Products, and the National Level Multi-State Seed Cooperative Society.

The Union Cabinet, which convened under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adopted a motion to this effect. The Cabinet has approved the formation of the National Cooperative Export Society, National Level Cooperative Society for Organic Products, and National Level Multi-State Seed Cooperative Society, according to Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, who gave a press briefing on the Cabinet's decisions.

Under the Multi State Cooperative Societies Act of 2002, the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Modi, sanctioned the creation of a national multi-state cooperative organic society. Yadav highlighted the importance of the change by stating that there are over 8.50 lakh cooperatives with roughly 29 crore members, the most of them are from rural regions. He said that the change will be to their advantage.

A multi-state cooperative for seed production was going to be established, the government declared in September of last year, according to Union Minister of Home and Cooperation Amit Shah.

Shah stated, "We are planning to establish a multi-state cooperative for seed production, which will engage in research and development (R&D), as well as promote, conserve, and produce new types of seeds. At a two-day national summit of state cooperation ministers on September 8, 2022, Shah stated, "For this, we are planning to build a multi-state cooperative by combining four or five huge cooperatives at the national level to boost the quality of seeds and conserve and promote our ancient seeds."

The government will establish a multi-state cooperative, headed by Amul, to focus on the marketing and certification of organic goods, according to Shah.

Within the next two months, the government will establish these two multi-state cooperatives for seed production and organic goods, according to Shah.

The Union Minister further stated that a multistate export house will soon be formed by Amul, Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED), National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), and Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited (KRIBHCO) to focus on exporting Khadi goods, handicrafts, and agricultural products.
