Guwahati: Electric Vehicles (EVs) are creating a buzz in the city not only for their looks but also for their benefits.

These cars have low maintenance cost, zero CO2 emission and more mileage.

In Assam, the Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 makes it mandatory for all government vehicles to be converted to electric vehicles by 2030.

The adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for road transport contributes to a wide range of goals. These include better air quality, reduced noise pollution, enhanced energy security, and in combination with a low-carbon power generation mix - reduced greenhouse emissions.

Car dealers are happy with the sale of EVs in the city. A senior officer from the Transport Department informed that till October 31, 2022, 36,700 electric vehicles have been registered in Assam.

The EV policy was enacted to ensure a robust infrastructure for electric vehicles and the rationale to attain rapid adoption of battery electric vehicles where they contribute 25% of all new vehicle registrations by 2026.

Recently, Tata Power stepped in to set up 100 electric vehicle charging points in Assam. The target of the Assam Government to make two lakh electric vehicles ply in the State in the coming five years has lured many parties to set up electric vehicle charging centres in the state. Already, around 150 electric vehicle charging centres exist in Assam.
