FISHFED gears up for Magh Bihu; targets to supply 20-30 quintals fish in Guwahati

Guwahati: Keeping in line with the sudden spurt in demand of fish during the Magh Bihu season, FISHFED, Assam has taken a target of supplying 20-30 quintals of fish across Guwahati markets.

The Uruka Feast, which is a day before Magh Bihu is considered of much significance by the Assamese community. And the Uruka feast is never completed without a plateful of fish.

During this time the demand of fish is always in the market here, what becomes the major centre of discussion for the fishery department of Assam.

Rupnagar, Meen Bhawan, Chandmari, Noonmati, Dispur, and Survey are among the areas in Guwahati where that FISHFED will supply fish.

Last year, the target taken by FISHFED was around 15-20 quintals alone for the Guwahati city.

Notably, the goal set last year was nearly accomplished. The FISHFED official said they are expecting the same results this year as well.

The enlisted cooperatives would supply fish to rest of the part of Assam.

According to the official, Bhokua and Rou fish weighing up to 3 kg are much in demand. And Chital, weighing upto 5 kg, are the most in demand among locals during Magh Bihu.

The latest price affixed by FISHFED, Assam for Rou weighing from1.5-2 kg is Rs. 280 and Rs.300 for 2.5kg of Rou, Bhokua of 1-1.5kg is about Rs. 300 and for 2.5-3 kg is Rs.420, Chital cost is Rs. 750/kg and Arhi cost is about Rs. 550/ kg.
