Golden Silk Park in city brings hope for Assam silk industry

Centre is a one-stop shop for producers & buyers

Guwahati: The new Golden Silk Park and Commercial Hub Assam in Resham Nagar of Guwahati will be a one-stop shop for both silkworm growers and end-product buyers.

The park, which was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 1 — consists of all the machines used in pre- and post-cocoon stages. The various activities include machines for reeling, spinning, etc. It gives a live representation of all the activities starting from the rearing of cocoons to the final sales stage.

The four types of silk to be displayed inside the park are Eri, Muga, Mulberry and Tussar. There are few sales counter displaying items like gamosa (Assamese towel), mekhala chadar, chadar, shawl, clothes items using natural dye, etc.
Besides, there are other attractions like a cocoon bank from where people can buy cocoons.

A table also displays indigenous machines used in primitive settings for various purposes for silk rearing. A chamber for Silk Testing will also be available soon and it will be affiliated by the Silkmark Organisation of India.

The centre also has a wide display of Assamese gamosa of ARTFED (Assam Apex Weavers and Artisans Co-operative Federation Limited). This variety is woven by 3-4 lakh weavers registered by the Swanirbhar Naari Portal, a flagship programme of the Handloom, Textiles and Sericulture Department.

An ARTFED seller informed Business Northeast that they have sold gamosa worth more than Rs 1 lakh since April 1.
A special counter of sericulture by-products and silkworm pupae pickles is also there.

The park is attached to a garden consisting of plants/trees for rearing Muga and Mulberry.

The Directorate of Sericulture is confident that this will help to improve the silk industry of Assam in the long run.

The fund for the park was released by the State-Owned Priority Development. The officials further informed that they have more development plans for the park and are awaiting the release of more funds.
