Guwahati: Two days after finding the Guwahati airport with a collapsed roof and water logged floors, the airport called in engineers from Delhi to work on "expansion" of the roof, Business North East has learned.

Chief Airport Officer (CAO) of the airport Utpal Baruah said the two engineers were brought in from their Delhi office. The airport was handed over to the Adani Group in 2021

“We are doing our best to make things happen”, Baruah told Business North East.

On Sunday, a part of the ceiling at outside terminal, forecourt area in the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati collapsed due to heavy rain, causing rainwaters to gush through the ceiling. The incident was captured on video and went viral.

No injuries were reported, and the approach road to the airport was temporarily closed as a tree was also uprooted in the airport premises. At least six flights were diverted following the episode until the situation was cleared up in around one hour, Baruah told Business North East. IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express flights were diverted to the airports in Agartala and Kolkata.

Meanwhile, Baruah has pointed out that some of the criticism directed at airport authorities was unwarranted. "It took us merely an hour to clear everything up", he stressed.

Thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall are predicted in Assam and other Northeastern states until April 4. An orange alert was issued for March 31 and a yellow alert until April 4.
