Guwahati: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has said it registered a significant upsurge in freight unloading activities, contributing to the regional economy.

In April 2024, NFR unloaded one thousand one hundred thirty freight-carrying rakes, showcasing a robust performance in facilitating the movement of essential and non-essential commodities across its jurisdiction. A rake is a set of coupled rail vehicles or wagons.

North Frontier Railway has transported a variety of goods like FCI rice, sugar, edible oil, food grains, fertiliser, cement, coal, vegetables, auto, tank, and other items during the month and unloaded them in different goods sheds within its jurisdiction.

Assam saw the highest volume, with 540 rakes unloaded, out of which 335 were loaded with essential commodities. Additionally, 25 rakes were unloaded in Tripura, eighteen in Nagaland, nine in Arunachal Pradesh, three in Manipur, and five in Mizoram. Furthermore, 76 freight rakes were unloaded in West Bengal and 69 in Bihar within NFR's jurisdiction.

NFR officials have attributed its success in handling freight unloading operations to the implementation of advanced terminal handling facilities and the introduction of more goods sheds. These initiatives have significantly enhanced the convenience for customers and stakeholders, allowing for the swift unloading and clearance of inward rakes within a limited timeframe, it said, adding that "continuous monitoring" at all levels has played a crucial role in reducing turnaround time and improving overall unloading efficiency.
