IIT Guwahati partners with Samagra Shiksha Assam to host mega Science and Maths Olympiad

Guwahati: IIT Guwahati and Samagra Shiksha Assam jointly organized a Science and Maths Olympiad on March 30. The event was touted one of the largest in the country, to nurture talent, promote critical thinking, and enhance problem-solving abilities among students in STEM subjects.

The Olympiad is part of IIT Guwahati's collaborations with Assam's government. Other collaborations include mentoring schools, establishing Science and Math Clubs, setting up live labs, residential teacher training, curriculum enhancement, school outreach activities, and training for school principals.

The event, under the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan initiative, aimed to foster scientific curiosity and mathematical proficiency among students in Assam. Over 1.14 lakh students from 3,828 schools participated in the event which sought to "nurture talent, promote critical thinking, and enhance problem-solving abilities", said a press release.

The Olympiad aimed to cultivate a culture of scientific inquiry and mathematical reasoning among students, identify and nurture talented individuals in STEM subjects, provide a competitive platform for students to demonstrate their skills, raise awareness about the significance of STEM education, and foster innovation and critical thinking skills. The event also involved 62 finalists from classes 9th and 10th, with three state winners emerging from the competition.

Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Guwahati, in his congratulatory message to the winners of the Olympiads mentioned that, “IIT Guwahati is very happy to organize this Olympiad event and will do everything in its capacity to enhance the quality of STEM education in Assam and the northeast region and promote activities related to STEM education by engaging with all stake holders of the education sector."
