Khadi commission unveils initiatives for artisans in rural Assam

The KVIC chairman stated goals to empower artisans by connecting them with the PM's 'Viksit & Aatmanirbhar Bharat campaign' 

Guwahati: Khadi institutions in Assam produced goods worth Rs 15.36 crore and sold wares amounting to Rs 20.17 crore by employing over 10,000 artisans, the Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) revealed at a public event in Guwahati on Saturday.

KVIC chairman Manoj Kumar distributed essential equipment and tool-kits to artisans under the 'Gramodyog Vikas Yojana' in the city. Kumar, during the event, highlighted the central government's commitment to empower rural communities as part of its 'Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

Addressing the participants, Kumar reiterated that in the last 10 years, the khadi and village industry sector has witnessed significant growth as turnover has surpassed Rs 1.34 lakh crore and over 9.5 lakh jobs have been generated. "[Our sector aims] to save traditional industries in rural areas and improve the livelihoods of poor artisans, including tribes, hilly areas, particularly SCs/STs and women", Kumar asserted.

"The KVIC has been continuously working on the vision of the Prime Minister to create sustainable employment opportunities even in the remote areas of Assam", he said, adding that the Northeast Indian state plays an important role in achieving the government's targets.

On this occasion, the chairman also inaugurated several training courses, including a beautician course, an agarbatti course, a computer course, and a bee-keeping course.
