Northeast's agriculture sector should align with technology: Minister

Lakhimpur: The agricultural landscape could play a crucial role in the "mainstream development" of Northeast India, Union Minister Arjun Munda observed on Monday, while virtually unveiling key facilities at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in Lakhimpur district of Assam.

Minister of State Kailash Choudhary echoing Munda's sentiments, urged scientists to leverage the natural diversity of the Northeastern region. He emphasized the need for technology development aligned with organic and natural farming practices, particularly focusing on pulses and oilseeds research to curb excessive spending on imports. Choudhary highlighted the necessity of fostering entrepreneurship through agricultural research and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.

The newly inaugurated administrative-cum-academic building, Manas Guest House, Subansiri Girls Hostel, and Brahmaputra Boys Hostel will foster a conducive environment for agricultural research and education in the region, according to Munda.

Addressing the inauguration, Munda reiterated the government's ambition to transform India into a developed nation by 2047, with agriculture playing a pivotal role. He mentioned about the mission worth Rs 11,000 crore aimed at reducing edible oil imports and achieving self-reliance in oilseed production. "We have to develop climate-resilient crop varieties and integrate agriculture education with livelihood and employment opportunities", he said.

Himansu Pathak, Secretary DARE and DG ICAR, New Delhi, lauded the inauguration as a milestone in ICAR's history, emphasizing the untapped potential of Northeast India. He assured continued support from ICAR in advancing research and development initiatives in the region.

Ranoj Pegu, Minister of Education, Welfare of Plain Tribes, and Backward Classes, Government of Assam, praised the efforts of IARI, Assam. Pradan Baruah, Member of Parliament, Lakhimpur, expressed optimism about the institute's potential to fulfill the aspirations of the youth in Northeast India.
