Purba Bharati Gas Private Limited (PBGPL) has commenced the supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to Guwahati, marking a major step towards clean and efficient energy solutions in the region. The official launch was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who lauded the initiative for its potential to transform urban utility services.
In addition to the Guwahati rollout, the event also saw the virtual inauguration of the first-ever Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in the Barak Valley, a milestone expected to benefit thousands in southern Assam. Furthermore, PBGPL simultaneously marked the start of PNG supply to key suburban locations—Hajo, Sualkuchi, Rangia, and Baihata Chariali.
Business North East (BNE) spoke to Manuj Kumar Baruah, CEO of PBGPL, who revealed that the company aims to supply PNG to at least 6,100 consumers within the next 15 days, starting with an initial commissioning of 101 households.
The entire project is part of a larger commitment involving an investment of Rs 2,600 crore over the next eight years to build a robust city gas distribution (CGD) network across Assam.
However, the road to implementation has not been without its challenges.
He stated, “In Guwahati, road and footpath conditions posed significant hurdles in laying pipelines. Unlike in other countries where dedicated utility corridors simplify such tasks, here we had to navigate through narrow roads, high traffic, and poorly maintained walkways.”
Despite these obstacles, the benefits of PNG are clear and far-reaching. “Piped Natural Gas is not only more affordable compared to LPG, but also ensures round-the-clock availability, eliminating the hassle of handling heavy cylinders, especially in multi-storey buildings,” he added. Moreover, the use of PNG enhances safety standards, offering a safer and cleaner alternative for domestic and commercial consumers.

The move aligns with the government’s vision for a greener Assam, improving the quality of life for its citizens while reducing dependency on conventional fuels. With this development, PBGPL is set to revolutionise urban energy access in the Northeast, fostering convenience, sustainability, and safety for thousands of households.
