Tinsukia: The Tinsukia district in Assam has become the first district in the Northeast to eliminate legacy waste through bio-mining, marking a significant milestone in waste management. The initiative, launched in 2023 by the Tinsukia district administration in collaboration with five municipal boards, has garnered praise from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Municipal solid wastes that have been collected and kept for years on some barren land or landfill for long periods are called legacy waste.

Supported by Oil Lindia Limited’s CSR fund, the project has treated 1.53 Lakh MT of waste, freeing up over 30 acres of land for developmental projects. The bio-mining projects, executed by M/s Call And Fix across all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), have reclaimed more than 80 bighas of land near urban centers in Tinsukia.

Tinsukia district commissioner, Swapneel Paul, mentioned the signing of a MoU with Dalmia cement under which refuse-derived fuel (RDF) produced during the bio-mining process is supplied to cement factories for utilization.

This land reclaiming initiative aligns with the Assam government’s commitment to its 'Green Agenda' as per the guidelines set by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
