Guwahati: Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences hosted its third convocation ceremony in a grandiose way at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra on June 26.
The convocation ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma; Vedprakash Mishra, Pro-VC of Datta Meghe Medical College, Nagpur; Keshab Mahanta, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, IT, Science & Technology; and Dr Siddharth Singh, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam’s Medical Education and Research Department.
During his speech at the convocation, Mahanta highlighted the establishment of three medical colleges within a year and the government’s plans to consider establishing nine nursing colleges and three dental colleges in the state.
Sarma emphasised the government’s focus on creating 5,000 nurses annually and encouraging the opening of nursing schools in private hospitals. He also mentioned the government's goal of establishing 25 more medical colleges in Assam, with 12 already completed.
Sarma further expressed his satisfaction with the progress made by Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences in the fields of health and education. He emphasised the government's efforts to make Assam a hub of medical education, with plans to increase the number of medical college seats to 2,700.
Additionally, DNA testing labs and a forensic laboratory will soon be established in the state. The chief minister also mentioned the connection between Srimanta Sankardeva University and Pragjyotish Medical College.
Further, Sarma outlined the government’s plan to establish a cutting-edge health education ecosystem, which aims to ensure accessible healthcare and create abundant job opportunities, ultimately leading to the development of a new health economy in Assam.
