Mumbai: For the fifth month of the new year, and with it comes a new set of bank holidays. 

Banks will be shut for 11 days in May 2022 including second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays. As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks will be closed on all public holidays with some regional holidays depending on the particular state. Regional holidays are decided by respective state governments.

The month of May observes 11 bank holidays - the first holiday starts from Eid-UL-Fitr on May 2 and other holidays like Buddha Purnima on May 16 will be observed holidays which are applicable to all banks in India except some states.

According to RBI guidelines, banks are closed on Sundays as well as on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Under the Negotiable Instruments Act, RBI has declared holidays on May 2 (Ramjan-Eid (Eid-UL-Fitr)), 3 (Bhagvan Shree Parshuram Jayanti/Ramjan-Eid (Eid-UI-Fitra)/Basava Jayanti/Akshaya Tritiya), 9 (Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore) and 16 (Buddha Purnima). Apart from this, there are five Sundays in the month falling on May 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, and also on the second and fourth Saturdays on May 14 and 28.

According to the Reserve Bank's calendar, apart from the weekend, there are 4 bank holidays in May month. The central government has divided the holidays into three categories, under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. In these three categories – Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement Holidays, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.
