Gangtok: Former Sikkim CM urges centre to showcase organic farming in G20 event

In his bid to promote the heritage of the state, former Chief Minister of Sikkim Pawan Chamling urged the centre and state to showcase organic farming in the state at the G20 event next year on December 22 at a meeting of his Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party in Gangtok.

Chamling added that G20 events will be held in 200 locations across India as the nation has acquired G20 Presidency in 2023. Sikkim will be hosting two G20 events in March 2023.

For this, each state needs to showcase its unique features.

From his side, he requested the Union government and the state government that Sikkim must showcase its organic farming.

He claimed that Sikkim is the global leader in organic farming.

It may be mentioned that Sikkim was declared an "Organic Farming State" in 2016. So far, it is the only fully organic farming state in India.

Chamling also congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on India’s G20 Presidency.

The Chief Co-ordinator for India’s G20 Presidency chaired a meeting in Gangtok with State Chief Secretary V. B. Pathak and other top government officials.

The meeting was held to discuss preparation and coordination by the state government for the upcoming G20 meetings in Sikkim scheduled for March 2023, a government release said at the time.
