State Government and NHAI Collaborate to Enhance Biodiversity and Sustainable Infrastructure

Guwahati: An initiative that seamlessly melds nature and modern infrastructure has taken root in the heart of Assam's landscapes. Green Highway’s are being developed to increase carbon footprint of the state.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Environment and Forest Department, Government of Assam, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has set in motion an ambitious project, initiating the making of Green Highways across the state.

The Minister of Environment and Forest, Chandra Mohan Patowary, underscored the profound significance of this MoU in shaping a sustainable future for Assam.

The project's primary objective is to enhance the state's natural allure while significantly contributing to environmental conservation.

The core essence of this innovative project lies in increasing the forest cover alongside Assam's extensive network of national highways.

The concept of Green Highways envisions a harmonious blend of lush foliage and modern roadways, creating an unparalleled driving experience and reducing carbon footprints simultaneously.

With the initial phase focusing on four pivotal divisions – Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Nagaon, and Barpeta – the project's scope is set to gradually envelop the entire state, promising a transformative journey for both residents and visitors alike.

The Social Forestry division of the Environment and Forest Department is the nodal agency for implementation of this project.
Their  job entails planting trees along highway margins and dividers while monitoring the saplings' growth as they take root in the fertile soil of Assam.

The multifaceted goals of the initiative include expanding the state's forest cover, mitigating carbon emissions, and enhancing the travel experience for all who traverse these highways.
