Guwahati: Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner Ruhul Amin is excited about the new projects India and Bangladesh have engaged in and hopes to see more connectivity and development projects to bring the two countries closer. Amin was speaking at the 54th Bangladesh Independence Day celebration in Guwahati on March 26.

Amin emphasized the need to boost trade relations between Bangladesh and Assam and hopes for more connectivity, given that the Akhaura-Agartala rail link has been activated. "We are trying to boost trade relations between Bangladesh and Assam. I hope more connectivity projects will come up. Relationships will not only improve with Northeast India but the entire country," he told Business North East.

It is no wonder that since Bangladesh won independence from Pakistan with India’s help, celebrations are held in India too. Along with Delhi, celebratory events were held in Agartala and Guwahati.

Assam's minister of power, sports, and youth welfare Nandita Gorlosa, who was also present at the event, congratulated the people of Bangladesh and emphasized cooperation between the two countries for shared prosperity.

The event was attended by around 250 guests including the Consul General of Bhutan, high-level government officials of Assam, journalists, university vice-chancellors and teachers, representatives of civil society, businessmen, artists, and Bangladeshi nationals.

India and Bangladesh have seen steady growth in bilateral trade, with India becoming the largest trade partner in South Asia. In 2022, the two nations concluded a joint feasibility study on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, seen as crucial as Bangladesh loses its 'Least Developed Country' status after 2026.
