Tripura to have its first Tea Auction Centre

The Department of Industries and Commerce of Tripura held an interactive discussion in collaboration with the Tea Board of India and Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) to discuss on the proposed tea auction centre in the state.

The demand was made by the Tripura Government to the centre which is likely to be fulfilled soon.

According to media reports, in the meeting held at the State Guest House, there were assurances of extending cooperation from both ends for setting up the tea auction centre, according to a government press release.

A good number of Tea sellers from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Jorhat and Tripura joined the meeting along with the officials of TTDC and Tea Board of India.

Taking part in the discussions, Secretary of Industries and Commerce department Abhishek Chandra laid emphasis  on establishing an auction centre for marketing of the state’s tea. He also assured that the state government would extend full cooperation in this regard.

Moreover, discussions were  held regarding e-auction, e-procurement, e-marketplace and e-selling.

Speaking to the media, Tripura Tea Board chairman Santosh Saha said that  the meeting was initiated to explore the possibilities of tea auction centre in the state.
He said that setting up of a tea auction centre in Tripura will boost the tea industry of the state.

He said, September 29, is a big day for the Tripura tea industry.

“We have introduced a local brand of tea named Tripureswari, which is being supplied through ration shops under a public distribution system across the state. The quality of Tripureswari tea has mesmerized tea lovers,” Saha said.

He said, the tea sellers, buyers and brokers placed their opinion and advice during the meeting while the representatives of the Tea Board of India also mentioned about necessary cooperation.

At the beginning of the interactive session, Tea Board of India’s Controller of Licensing Rajanigandha Sil Naskar highlighted the details of Tripura tea industry through a power point presentation.

Executive Director of Tea Board of India’s North East regional office- Arunita Phukan Yadav, Deputy Director Kamala Chandra Baishya and other officials were present in the meeting.

Tea auctions are a way for producers to sell their teas to a wide variety of customers in a reasonable manner, allowing for a fair price discovery. In India, public tea auctions have always been an important medium for primary tea marketing. Only loose tea in bulk packets is sold at public tea auctions.

Tea Auctions in India are looked after by The Tea Board of India. The Tea Board of India is a government-run organization that regulates the tea trade in the country.
