Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority to develop a comprehensive mobility plan in Assam

Assam government has moved in a direction to set up a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority for the planning, supervision, coordination, development and maintenance of urban transport.

The Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority will be headed by the chief minister as a chairman which will include members from different departments and eminent experts in all the transport sectors. The authority will design a comprehensive mobility plan for urban transportation.

The authority will also prepare Transport Investment Program for the Urban Mobility Area to achieve the goals of a comprehensive mobility plan. It will come up with support solutions for the management and integration of Urban Transport Including transport planning, design of transport systems and selection of modes of transport, including technology-based solutions.

The authority shall also establish an Urban Transport Fund to implement the plan

The state government will contribute an initial sum as a seed fund to the authority. The central government, state government or other entities may make such grants.

It may be mentioned here that this is in accordance with a report by the Asian Development Bank that lists six main goals for Guwahati:
i) To conserve the natural environment
ii) To develop an integrated multi-modal transport system with three mass transit lines
iii) To develop physical and social infrastructure – education, health, cultural facilities plus water supply and solid waste management
iv) To provide space for the efficient functioning of economic activities
v) To create an image befitting that of the State capital.
vi) To provide affordable housing with the removal of slums.

Three new town areas were included in the Master Plan- two on the north of the river and one on the south. Plans were put forward to construct a new bridge across the Brahmaputra to link the southern bank near the city centre to the new town on the northern bank.
