Earn Rs 15000 a month as an unskilled worker in Sikkim.

Sikkim government has revised the rate of minimum wages for Unskilled, Semi-skilled, Skilled and Highly-skilled workers.

A wage of Rs. 15000/- ( fifteen thousand) will be paid for the lowest category of unskilled labour.

This was informed by the Minister, Labour, Govt. of Sikkim, Shri Lok Nath Sharma in a meeting held at Shram Bhawan, today.

Labour Minister Lok Nath Sharma informed that the state of Sikkim has made a historic decision to enhance the daily wages of Unskilled workers from Rs. 300/- to Rs. 500/- with the highest enhancement in the country by 67%.

Similarly, the daily wages of Semi-skilled labour were revised to Rs. 520/- from existing rates of Rs.320/- (15600/- for 30 days). The Skilled workers will get Rs. 535/- daily wages (16050 for 30 days) and the Highly skilled workers will receive Rs.565/- per day ( Rs. 16950/- for 30 days). The workers working up to the altitude of 8000 ft. shall be paid above mentioned revised wages.

Besides, the rates of daily wages of workers working above the altitude of 8001 ft. to 12000 ft. shall be paid 50% more than the normal wage and the workers from 12001 ft. to 16000 ft. shall be paid 75% more than the normal wage and also the workers from 16001 ft. and above shall be paid double the normal wage, Minister labour LN Sharma informed.
The rates shall be effective from July 11 2022 and the labour shall be given arrear of two months from the date of implementation, he added.

Minister Sharma also stated that the department of labour had issued a notification on 11/07/2022 seeking feedback, suggestions, comments and views from the persons who were likely to be affected and were given a period of 60 days for writing to the labour department and after completion of the specified time, the department had to undergo thorough scrutiny and examination and subsequently, issued the notification on revised rates of daily wages, today.

The department of labour will organize a state-wide campaign to acquire registration of all workers, so as to ensure optimum benefits in education, medical and other essential necessities.
